Readers of this blog are focused on data acquisition for motorsports, but there are interesting data acquisition products cropping up for other sports, as described in this NY Times article. Technologies include:
- heart rate monitors
- power output monitors for bicycles
- gps-based speed/distance/elevation/location data loggers
- bike computers (time/speed/distance/pedalling rate)
Most of today's sports products include a data logging function, with the ability to export the data to a computer for further analysis. (I wonder if elite athletes now have a Data Acquisition Guy as well as a coach?) With high-end units like the Garmin Forerunner 301 (integrated heart rate and gps speed/distance monitor/logger) selling for only $370, these products are flying off the shelves.
